How can I possibly talk about Poland and not mention Pope John Paul II– he was instrumental in helping to bring down communism in his home country. Poland has so many priest and nuns – the priest even teach religion at the public schools. There is not a day that goes by that I do not see at least 3-4 nuns about town in their habits. The one in the photo almost ran me down on her bike racing to mass. Almost 90% of Poles are catholic.
I look forward to going to mass because it is a place that I feel one with the group – like I belong. Mass is the same in all languages. Every Sunday all over the world every Catholic is hearing the same opening, the same readings communion closing etc. There are no cushions on the kneelers and people often kneel on the cement floor – even the old people. I am beginning to understand why playing my “old lady “card is not working- old people in Europe are tough!
